October's here already! A huge welcome, especially to all our new subscribers this month. If you are joining us for the first time, maybe because you downloaded a resource from the website, thank you SO much for being part of the community.

It's officially Autumn, which means I am probably going to be concentrating on Maths Week England from now until November - don't forget to sign up for updates as soon as possible, or see the exciting news in item 3...

I am currently busy packing for a trip to Thailand. Not a holiday sadly, but the next best thing - a CPD tour!

Pre-Covid, I used to go to Asia annually to deliver CPD with my good friend and colleague Liz Gibbs, and this year we have finally decided it's time to go back.

We'll be running training, events for children, as well as consultancy. I'll be missing the visit of Liverpool to the Albion next Saturday, but I'm sure I can find it on TV somewhere in Bangkok!

1. Website of the Month: Mr Morley Maths
This is definitely my favourite sort of website - made by teachers, for teachers, and not driven by commercial priorities.

Full of great material both for students and teachers. The bits I have looked at have been very useful, and there are even some PowerPoints that could be used to deliver CPD.

This is a generous offering from a member of our community - please buy him a coffee using the link on his page if you like what you see.
2. Themed Days this month (October 2023)
A few theme days for October that you might be able to make use of:

3rd: World Architecture Day - Golden Ratio, anyone?!
4th: World Animal Day
4th - 10th: World Space Week
5th: World Smile Day
7th: National Poetry Day and World Smile Day
10th: World Mental Health Day and Grandparents Day
16th: World Food Day
17th-23rd: National Parent Week
21st: Trafalgar Day and Apple Day - fruit not tech.
29th: World Cat Day

And of course, it is Black History Month; some of you might want to share stories about inspirational mathematicians such as NASA's Catherine Johnson, for example.

4. Mug of the Month (and Coaster)

I met a lovely teacher wearing a funny t-shirt the other week, and I just knew I had to use the design on a mug. You'll love this one, especially if you like being better than average, or want to encourage someone else by giving them a fun gift.

And it's ideal if you are about to introduce sigma notation for the first time, of course!
5. Rubik's Cube - in a Bottle!
This is not a trick photo!  No tricks or collapsible parts - It's a genuine Rubik's Cube inside a genuine glass bottle. I built this on my kitchen table over the summer.

Those of you who were at the Joint Subject Association Conference (for a flavour, see my blogs starting here) may have seen me trying in vain to achieve this, but the truth is I didn't have the right quality of cubes.

I have now imported two dozen from the USA, to go with the bottles which I had to import from Canada, so this is the most international product I have ever created!
I am selling a VERY limited number (they take a long time to build) to try to raise money for Maths Week England, and also to accompany my brand new show, 'The Maths and Magic of Rubik's Cube' which makes its official UK debut at the Royal Institution during Maths Week.

You can get hold of this unique item from here. Warning - they are not cheap, due to the top quality of the parts, the high cost of importing, and the time they take to create, but you will be the talk of your school when you display this impossible object! (I do have an exclusive offer for subscribers though - the first five of you to use the code BOTTLED will get a £5 discount).

I expect the first batch of twelve bottles to sell out fast, especially as I am holding some back for the RI event.
6. Finite Group

I got a message recently from Katie Steckles who many of you may know, to say that she is setting up a new online maths community along with Sophie Maclean, Peter Rowlett and Matt Scroggs.

The idea is to share mathematical ideas, as well as running monthly livestreamed chats.

The first of these is coming up in just over two weeks. I'll be in Ireland (for their maths week) but will try to listen in. All the details can be found at http://www.finitegroup.co.uk/
7. Puzzle of the Month

I must have misjudged how interesting a problem this was, given that I have had no schools submit any entries as yet, so I'm giving it one final month and then giving up!

Look at these two multiplications:

12 x 63 = 21 x 36

42 x 48 = 24 x 84

What is unusual about these multiplication facts?

And can you find any more examples?

Extra Challenge: Can you generalize?
That's it for October's newsletter, friends.

Don't forget - register your school for Maths Week England NOW!

See you in October.
